That is an actualization of plus plus power. He would likely be the second or third best player on the team. He would be an all star candidate and sure fire silver slugger finalist. I am not looking at his splits so maybe I am wrong but am pretty sure he does not have much of a problem with same side pitching. I think what you describe is a player we were hoping to see here when we were evaluating him as a prospect several years ago, but he has never found that ceiling. Maybe it is simply an injury issue, but time is certainly slipping away. I hope you are right. It would be a major game changer. I believe over 100 games he could approach 25.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-52902134271161403382014-01-27T06:44:48.972-05:002014-01-27T06:44:48.972-05:00@1st anon - Plus plus power these days is about 35...@1st anon - Plus plus power these days is about 35 home runs, so for Reimold to hit 25, he really needs to be seeing at least 120-140 games. That no longer is supplementing Lough.

@2nd anon - For Lough, you seem to place a lot more stock in his PCL performance than scouts, Royals, everyone who actually works in baseball seems to. If you have a better way of analyzing these things, I am sure many people will be very interested in your approach. For Young, I don't think one needs to state the presence of DH in one league or another as that is well known. The article may poorly stated it, but if a hitter is a good enough hitter to be a DH then he probably is good enough that the team could actually trade him or use him as a bench bat instead of releasing him to pick up a player who had very marginal upside.

@Matt - 1. I would hesitate calling his defense superb. The only source suggesting that is his defensive metrics and you really need about two seasons worth of data to solify those numbers to any reasonable degree. He had, what, 90 games? I think you are right though that if Lough can hit enough, he should have about 12 home runs and about 15 stolen bases over a full season. His rate walks will probably really hurt him though.
2. Unless they really loved Urrutia during minicamp, I imagine there might be a trade in store for the team. They certainly have the relief pitching to pick up a marginal left handed batter.
3. Peguero could slige through waivers, but I imagine a team like the Astros or Marlins could manage to find use for a youngish player like him.

@Liam - Only comment is that, again, I would not expect anything I would call superior.Jon Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03521809778977098687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-12991033371464076792014-01-26T14:37:25.184-05:002014-01-26T14:37:25.184-05:00Lough looks to me like a Nate McLouth clone who is...Lough looks to me like a Nate McLouth clone who is still under team control. Will probably be slightly below average defensively but will make up with superior defense.

Judging by every interview I've seen with him and the way he was handled last year, the org and Duquette specifically are really high on Urrutia. Reports from minicamp indicate he gained nearly 20 pounds and is driving the ball much better, and if he has a solid spring I'd expect him to start in Baltimore.

That leaves one more spot and its Reimold's to lose. I also wouldn't be surprised if one of the others explodes this spring and forces his way onto the club in some capacity like Jake Fox did circa 2012. In the minors, he has shown the ability to hit for power, although it has been partly due to his speed. It does not appear he is a flashy base-stealer, but rather an effective base-stealer. Don't be surprised if Lough totals a dozen net steals and double digit home-runs in 2013.

2. Say Tyler Colvin decides to sign with another team. Who is the leading candidate to DH against LHP? Henry Urrutia is definitely a more long-term solution, but it would most likely be more beneficial to him if he spent some additional time in Norfolk. Sadly, Xavier Paul could be the temporary majority DH in this scenario. Wilson Betemit is a still a free agent, and has a historical success against RHP. Signing him to a minor league deal could be very useful.

3. Personally, Steve Pearce is a better option to keep on the roster than Delmon Young. Although Pearce and Young hit LHP at about the same rate, Pearce is slightly cheaper and is somewhat capable of playing defense. Do you think Francisco Peguero will slide through waivers? He could be some useful depth.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06079675043270446349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-54208961512975857242014-01-26T13:11:58.160-05:002014-01-26T13:11:58.160-05:00the writer seems to miss so many points his points...the writer seems to miss so many points his points are useless. he says lough is not a good bat. but lough has hit at every level both right and left handed pitching. he says a good way to tell youngs worth is that the phillies let him go for a non impact player to be added. only there is no dh in the national league. this article is a jokeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-53962991932865960522014-01-26T11:26:52.215-05:002014-01-26T11:26:52.215-05:00This requires a CHANGE IN THINKING by the front of...This requires a CHANGE IN THINKING by the front office.
1. IF we are to give the minors time to really develop to their fullest - Gausman, Bundy, Wright, Rodriguez, Schoop, .... others we need to not be pressured to bring them up in order to have some wins.
2. Filling in with these free agents for the 2 years before all these minors and more should probably be ready to actually Break Down the Door to the Majors and be a part of the 25 man roster is a Major Investment in the future.
3. It continues the WINNING WAYS started. The fan base had been infused with the enthusiasm of old days. It opens the doors again to free agent looking at the Orioles as a Destination.
4. It makes it easier to extend the players we want to stay and be the core.
5. It should keep the seats warmed with Excited Baltimore fans.

BUT all of this will require the Front Office and the Ownership especially to go through Psycho Analysis. Theraputic examination of goals and methods to achieve. Since they have worn the trail to bedrock on this Not Spending and Hoarding money (as in the extra $25 MIL OF TV MONEY).

PERHAPS THE OWNERSHIP SHOULD TAKE SOME OF THE $25 MIL FOR ITS PSYCHIATRIC EXAMINATION.
