If anything, his OPS in 2015 (0.741) was higher than the team's left fielders as a group (0.640)... and even the MLB average at LF (0.735). Besides, moving Wieters off the catcher position could increase his offensive output even more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-44320667192540315402015-11-19T09:33:35.831-05:002015-11-19T09:33:35.831-05:00The ribbon is in the mail, Patrick.

Especially if they don't think Wieters would stay healthy.

Agreed that the comp pick would have been ideal. I do think a Wieters/Joseph combo can be a top-five combo in the majors. If only the Os had more depth.

Matt Perezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16191574755038653061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-26943253566797489022015-11-18T23:07:45.288-05:002015-11-18T23:07:45.288-05:00I was surprised Wieters took the QO, but its $16 m...I was surprised Wieters took the QO, but its $16 million for one year. Its a probably not what DD wanted but he's got someone who can platoon with Joseph, possibly move Clevenger if there's interest, and (if Wieters returns to form) use as a rental for a contending team in July. Wieters could also move between C and the DH spot which still isn't sealed up for the O's. In the end I'm more hopeful than disappointed, but still would have like another 1st round comp pick for him turning down the QO. Second, I...First of all, #NotAllCamdenDepotWriters

Second, I wouldn't be too upset by a platoon at C, provided there was some sort of established comfort level between the SP and the C that were most often paired together. I think metrics for calling games are in their infancy, if they ever even progress past it, but I'm sure that some SP do feel better when they're more confident in their batterymate. It seems the Orioles are going to be forced into a platoon situation by Wieters' questionable health and desire to preserve it. It'd be nice to auction off the most expensive half of that platoon and replace it with a cheaper option, and the dropoff between Wieters 100/Joseph 60 and Joseph ~100/somebody else ~60 might not be so steep as to be the reason for not contending.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03025547405242334439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-66454222731277285342015-11-17T08:36:31.032-05:002015-11-17T08:36:31.032-05:00Then you're looking for a second-tier catcher ...Then you're looking for a second-tier catcher to pair with Joseph that costs 4 or 5 million and not someone like Wieters that costs $16M. A Wieters/Joseph combo where Wieters catches 90 games and Joseph catches 70 (or even 100/60) has promise to be good but I'm not sure that it's worth paying an extra $16M. Whatever, it's done now.

I will say that if Wieters does catch for 100 games then that will be enough to improve his value. Could even artificially inflate it. Baltimore may be an ideal spot for him (probably should have mentioned that in the article).Matt Perezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16191574755038653061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-57801797855047923862015-11-17T07:51:39.499-05:002015-11-17T07:51:39.499-05:00Somebody should tell Caleb that. They seem certain that he will always need to be paired with a good catcher who will put in 60 to 80 games a year.Jon Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03521809778977098687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-27894259916342726602015-11-17T06:47:26.494-05:002015-11-17T06:47:26.494-05:00Another reason to work a Rasmus/Wieters trade. He could get more innings with the Astros.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
