Many players, as recently as Derek Jeter, have said that a lot of defensive factors cannot be quantified and relies on watching players play. I will take the opinion of people who see the players on a regular basis rather than someone sitting behind a computer screen. If you watch him play RF on a regular basis (I saw him 37 times this past year) and think he is average based on some "stat" I think that is shortsided. I do believe this blog has continually undervalued Markakis and seems to always look for a reason or stat to take a jab at him. Rasmus? that's all we need is some diva who strikes out a lot.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-58834483358819044212015-01-08T19:56:03.493-05:002015-01-08T19:56:03.493-05:00If you're basing your arguments about defense ...If you're basing your arguments about defense on subjective awards and nothing else, then you aren't adding much to the discussion. I'm sorry to see Nick go as well, but he got the contract he wanted somewhere else, so more power to him.

That is the way we have to go these days.Eriknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-53081797318636151422015-01-01T10:02:54.783-05:002015-01-01T10:02:54.783-05:00I dont see how Rasmus is anything but an upgrade o...I dont see how Rasmus is anything but an upgrade over Markakis.

He's been better since 2009. Over hte last 3 years, he has been about 2 wins better. There's enough noise to call that a wash if you are so inclined. But, at the minimum, that means they are equal.

Rasmus is younger. Rasmus is cheaper. Rasmus is better defensively.

Being cheaper matters -- it allows for more roster flexibility this year and next. Adam Jones can take some more days off with Rasmus in CF and the O's not losing a ton of offense (instead of say Lough taking teh CF reigns).

I dont get Orioles fans who think Markakis from 2015-2019 is the be all end all. He has no range, he has little power. Neither of those are good in a corner outfielder.

I appreciate what Nick brought to the Orioles, but for 3 years less and 3 millions less, I'll take Rasmus every single time and it's not even close.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-208176323599464272014-12-31T22:29:25.348-05:002014-12-31T22:29:25.348-05:00Rasmus would be a significant downgrade from Marka...Rasmus would be a significant downgrade from Markakis.
