Quite frankly, there is a better argument that we should restock the minors with batting prospects by trading some established expensive players and look for a 2017 horizon. We have been promoting a smart aggressive play for the past three years due to players likely to depart via free agency and increasing arbitration costs.

2. Those numbers seem quite low to me. Burnett, Morales, and Cruz will likely see 10MM+ per year deals.

3. Goal now is probably to make best 85 win team and hope for good luck.Jon Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03521809778977098687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-77904534065158682782013-12-31T18:13:23.452-05:002013-12-31T18:13:23.452-05:00What do you think about this Boston Globe article ...What do you think about this Boston Globe article http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/12/29/orioles-owe-fans-take-their-best-shot/yUJds8eiGBaLsO4GGT7joK/story.html stating we should take a shot now. I know that we won't go for pitchers seeking deals of 3 or more years (Jimenez, Santana, etc.) but do you agree with this strategy?

Against last year's payroll we should still have around $15 million to spend this year. Assuming we won't go for the pitchers of the ilk listed above and we won't increase payroll, here is what I suggest: We still need a Starter, a DH, and a reliever. In that order. Spend $8 million on a starter (Burnett, or Arroyo), $5 million on Morales/Cruz (don't care much for either of these guys but we already lost out on others more suitable), and $2 million on another reliever Downs, Frasor, or best we can get for 2 million. Then Buck can figure out who will close, why not close by committee if the splits are so devastating.

It may take some time for the market value of some of these players to dip this low, but it's tough to do much with $15 million.

Below is list of players who have signed this year all of whom I think would have made sense for the Orioles at the price they signed. Colon ($10 million), Josh Johnson ($8 million), Loney ($7 million), Justin Morneau ($6.25 million), David Murphy ($6 million), McClouth ($5.5 million), Mark Ellis (5 million), Rajai Davis ($5 million), Gavin Floyd ($4 million), Eric Chavez (3.5 million), LaTroy Hawkins (2.5 million), Brian Roberts ($2 million), Wesley Wright (1.5 million).
Loney, Floyd, Hawkins, and Wright is a combination that addresses the three needs for $15 million.

Hopefully the Orioles can make three more good moves with what they have remaining. Webb was a good signing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-73672477658010256092013-12-31T13:58:24.390-05:002013-12-31T13:58:24.390-05:00Did you even read the article? I also never said he was old; I just stated his age.

If you're going to sign a DH to a multiyear deal that also costs you a draft pick, you better make sure he's a significant offensive upgrade. He would help them a bit, I think, but I also think his offensive skills are overrated.

A career .333 OBP is not a high OBP.Matt Kremnitzerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15693430925266947705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2893512317902577458.post-91377866832072777062013-12-31T13:47:32.774-05:002013-12-31T13:47:32.774-05:00Ridiculous a argument. He would protect the 3,4 hitters has high OBP and power numbers. You exaggerate injury concerns. He is 30 and that is not old.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
